Ocean Scholar

Brief

Express the brilliant life of the ocean through an elegant logo animation, ultimately creating a piece that evokes the diverse beauty of the blue depths of the ocean.

Consider visual themes of complexity, fluidity, biodiversity, scale, and contrast.

In 3 weeks, create a 1:1 & 9:16 2D animated logo for Ocean Conservancy within 5-10 seconds.

The Pitch

For this pass, the goal was to present two different concepts and styles.

01

Bubbles

The direction uses bubbles to show the various life forms below in the ocean. Utilizing clean simple shapes and silhouettes of the animals.

The animation will be smooth and dynamic using After Effects.

02

Wanderlust

This direction depicts the beautiful underwater scenery which people want to achieve.

The animation will be smooth with parallax using After Effects.

Revisions

01

Bubbles

The first direction, Bubbles, was chosen as the concept felt stronger. However, the design needed reworking.

This was a quick pass where two different styles were created.

The goal was to be more relevant to today's style while still promoting the branding and enhancing the message.

With this in mind, I created the two images to the right. Both of the above revisions were working. The decision was then decided on which style represented the branding the best.

First Pass

This pass was gathering the motion for the main bubble, having a moving gradient in the background, and then showing how the logo would reveal.

The critique for this pass was to think about the logo reveal more and to finish animating the rest of the bubbles.

Client Meeting

The concept was enjoyable bringing the human perspective through a lens underwater in a playful way. Work on the end logo, so that the two 'chapters' are more connected.

This updated pass was seen by Scholar the next morning.

Second Pass

This pass has updated audio adding to the piece overall, the rest of the bubbles added in, and the timing adjusted for the logo reveal.

This pass was passable, however some further improvements were decided upon. Such as adjusting the timing of some bubbles, the turtle's movement, and trying out another way for the logo to reveal.

Third Pass

Exploring different timings for the logo reveal were explored for this pass.

Both of the above revisions were working. The decision was to move forward with the version that had a subtle delayed animation for the logo.

Final Pass

Above are the final animations for this piece. Overall, this project was very fun to create and it was extremely exciting to have the opportunity to meet with Scholar.
